Lemon Tasting

Discover the Flavors of Lake Garda
Lemon Farms and Museums

Perched between the jagged cliffs of the Alps and the crystal waters of the lake, Limone sul Garda holds a secret that has captivated travelers for centuries. Here, the landscape is defined by the Limonaie—monumental stone pillar structures that rise like ancient cathedrals against the mountainside. These “gardens of stone” are the last vestiges of a heroic age of agriculture, where local families defied the northern climate to create a Mediterranean oasis.

The lemon houses of Garda are a marvel of traditional engineering. Built starting in the 17th century, these terraced gardens were designed to capture every ray of sun while protecting delicate citrus trees from the cold mountain winds. To walk through them is to step into a vertical forest; stone walls, wooden beams, and white pillars create a rhythmic architecture that is unique to this shoreline.

Classic Tour
The tour begins with a guided walk through the multi-tiered terraces of a traditional Limonaia (lemon house). Visitors climb the stone steps among the iconic white pillars and wooden rafters, learning how these structures were manually “sealed” each winter to protect the trees from the Alpine chill.
Guides explain the different varieties of fruit—from the classic Garda lemon to the massive Cedro (citron).
The walk continues into the on-site museum, which often houses 18th-century tools, historical maps of the trade routes that sent Garda lemons to the royal courts of Northern Europe, and black-and-white photography of the families who worked these cliffs.
The experience concludes with a curated tasting that showcases the versatility of the fruit.

Garda Gold Cosmetic Workshops
Because Garda lemons are famous for their high essential oil content and medicinal properties, their use goes beyond the kitchen.
Some local boutiques and farm-museums offer workshops focused on Citrus Apothecary. Visitors learn how to extract oils from the thick, “shiny” peels to create handmade soaps, perfumes, and Vitamin E-rich hand creams. You’ll learn about the Madernina lemon, a native variety with an incredibly thin, fragrant skin that was historically used to cure scurvy for sailors on the lake—you’ll even get to create a small “remedy” or balm to take home.

Citrus Sensory “Blind Tasting”
To prove the quality of the northernmost lemons in the world, some farms host a professional “Citrus Flight.” Similar to a wine tasting, you are guided through a blind sampling of different citrus juices and zests.
You will be challenged to identify the Volkamariano Red Lemon (a rare, deep-orange fruit) versus a classic Garda lemon or a Citron. The tasting usually finishes with a sample of Salted Lemons—a peculiar local preserve flavored with chili or pepper, traditionally used to season raw lake fish.
